Do I need to contact the merchant before filing a dispute?

It’s a good idea to try to resolve the issue with the merchant/business if you can. If that doesn’t work, you can open a dispute claim with us. The process and protections differ slightly depending on the card type and the situation.

There’re a couple of reasons why we encourage you to reach out to the merchant in addition to filing a claim:

  • Discussing the transaction with them often remedies the situation quicker, avoids delays, and can save you valuable time.
  • When we research a dispute, a key factor to the outcome includes the merchant’s response. By providing us with this information, it helps us to further support your claim.

If a dispute is started, and later it’s resolved directly with the merchant, contact us at the number on the back of your card to cancel it. We accept relay calls.
