KNOWLEDGE BASE

How does overdraft protection work with my personal checking or savings account?

Overdraft protection moves money to a personal deposit account when its available balance becomes negative. Funds come from a linked eligible1 account, which may help avoid potential fees. The owners need to be the same on both the deposit account and the account(s) acting as overdraft protection.

When overdraft protection occurs, $5 is transferred if the negative balance available is $5 or less. If the overdraft is $5.01 or more, the amount moved is in multiples of $50.

If the overdraft is more than $5, an Overdraft protection transfer fee of $12.50 may be charged. The fee is waived if one of the following circumstances apply:

  • The available balance is negative by $50 or less.
  • The transfer comes from a linked and eligible deposit2 account.

Below are examples where overdraft protection occurred and funds were transferred, potentially causing a fee.
